Scandia Camp Mendocino
2021 Virtual Camp
Dance Classes

Scandia Camp offers a sampling of the rich variety of dances in Norway and Sweden, where dances often have their own unique style from region to region and even town to town. Scandinavian dances are primarily couple dances, but individual participants can still learn the steps and character of the dances from the classes. All of the dance classes will be both progressive, building from one class to the next, and stand alone for those who are unable to attend all the sessions of a specific class. For attendees without a partner, holding onto a pillow can make the turning sections easier. As with many Zoom classes, participants will be muted. Questions via the chat will be shared with the teachers/presenters.

Norwegian Dance Classes

Øyvind Sandum and Karin Brandsbol will focus primarily on springleik, a dance from the Otta valley (Ottadalen) region of Gudbrandsdal. It is a couple dance with variations in style that are unique to each town in the valley. Øyvind and Karin will be teaching the style from Vågå including the basic step and the most common motifs, turns and optional variations. The basic step will be emphasized each day with the addition of different motifs throughout the three days of teaching.

Ida (Ida Bjørgen Røstad) is the fiddler for the classes.
