Canadian Hardanger Fiddle player Laura Ellestad obtained her bachelor’s degree in Traditional Music Performance from the Ole Bull Academy in 2012, followed by a master’s degree in Performance from the Norwegian Academy of Music in 2014. She was the recipient of the Hardanger Fiddle Association of America’s Ole Bull Scholarship in 2005, and in 2009 she was awarded the Torleiv Bolstad Memorial Stipend for her work to promote traditional music from the Valdres region.

In 2014 she became the first North American Hardanger Fiddle player to advance to the elite A class at Landskappleiken (the Norwegian national folk music championships). She is currently a Lecturer at the Department of Traditional Art and Traditional Music at the University of South-Eastern Norway in Rauland. She is also completing PhD research on the Norwegian-American folk music milieu in the American Upper Midwest.

Laura pursues an active performance career as a soloist, as well as performing in the ensembles Ellestad Wiik Duo and Evelina Petrova Trio. Her debut solo recording, Valdresspel i Amerika, released in 2014, received critical acclaim and was nominated for a Norwegian Grammy Award (Spellemannprisen) as well as a Norwegian Folk Music Award (Folkelarmprisen).

Laura will teach a Hardanger Fiddle class.
